Ethiopian placing code on Lufthansa flights

Further to Lufthansa placing its code on Ethiopian flights, Ethiopian is placing its code on select Lufthansa services from Frankfurt to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Geneva and Stockholm.

Ethiopian orders eight Bombardier Q400s

Ethiopian Airlines has ordered eight Bombardier Q400s to renew its domestic fleet, with an option for another four.

Lufthansa placing code on Ethiopian’s african flights

While no formal announcements were made, Lufthansa is placing its code on select Ethiopian Airlines services to Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Kigali, and Entebbe.

Kuwait Airways to place code on Ethiopian’s flights

Kuwait Airways will place its code on Ethiopian’s 3x per week flights between Addis Ababa and Kuwait City as of th begining of November.

Ethiopian to code share with Saudi Arabian

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian will place its code (ET1500) on Saudi Arabian’s single weekly flight between Addis Ababa and Jeddah beginning January 4, increasing Ethiopian’s weekly service to five.

Ethiopian to serve Abuja

According to Xinhua, Ethiopian Airlines will begin 3x per week service to Abuja, Nigeria on November 15 following an accord signed on Sunday between Nigerian and Ethiopian officials. Flights will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ethiopian to Lubumbashi

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian will serve Lubumbashi, DRC as of the end of October. Flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays as part of a triangle route that includes Harare, Zimbabwe.

Ethiopian to Ouagadougou

Ethiopian Airlines will return to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with 3x per week service beginning October 26. Flights will be operated Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ethiopian to place code on Lufthansa flights to the US

Lufthansa has applied and received permission from the US Department of Transportation for Ethiopian Airlines to place its code (to code share) on LH flights between Europe and the United States. The approval, which is initially based on service between Frankfurt and the cities of San Fransisco and Los Angeles per the application, allows for Ethiopian to place its code effective August 1.

Ethiopian leases two B752s

Ethiopian Airlines has leased and taken delivery of two B752s from Babcock & Brown on 5-year terms. Both aircraft were previously leased to now defunct ATA Airlines.

Ethiopian and Asky to form strategic partnership

Ethiopian Airlines and newly formed West African airline “Asky” have reportedly signed an MoU to form a strategic partnership which will see Asky operating out of a new hub in Lome, Togo. Ethiopian will hold a stake of up to 20% in the new airline which is expected to take flight before the end of 2008, operating up to 8 leased aircraft on local, regional and long haul routes.

Ethiopian Cargo to Liege

Ethiopian Cargo will reportedly move its freighter service from Brussels to Liège (also in Belgium) effective June 16.

Ethiopian and Brussels to code share

Ethiopian Airlines and Brussels Airlines have entered into a code share agreement covering Ethiopian’s daily service between Addis Ababa and Brussels. The agreement takes effect on June 17.

Ethiopian leases another B763

Ethiopian Airlines has leased a B763 from Dublin-based AWAS. This aircraft is the third example leased by ET from this aircraft leasing organization.

Highlights of Ethiopian’s upcoming summer schedule

Here are highlights from Ethiopian’s posted upcoming summer schedule, with changes beginning in June:
- Cairo: daily, up from current 6x per week, with no daytime flights
- Khartoum: daily, with all flights to Cairo making a stop at KRT
- Lilongwe: daily, up from the current 4x per week. Flights will operate as part of a triangle route via Lusaka
- Harare: no change in frequency, but no stopover in Lusaka. Nonstop each way
- Douala: 5x per week, up from the current 4x per week
- Libreville: 5x per week, up from the current 4x per week
- Dubai: 19x per week, up from current 17 weekly
- Guangzhou: daily, up from the current 5x per week
- Hong Kong: 4x per week, up from the current 3x per week
- Bangkok: 11x per week, up from the current 9x per week
- Stockholm: 4x per week, up from the current 3x per week

Ethiopian returns to Riyadh, Kuwait City

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian Airlines will resume service to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait City. Flights will operate on Mondays and Thursdays using B73W aircraft beginning the second week of June. Ethiopian last served both cities in the 1990s.

Ethiopian and Lufthansa to implement codeshare

Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa will implement an agreement signed in 2007 to codeshare on the Addis Ababa - Frankfurt route. With this agreement, the airlines will offer a combined daily service between their respective hubs effective March 30.

Ethiopian and AirOne to codeshare

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian Airlines and Air One of Italy will begin codesharing on the Addis Ababa - Rome-Fiumicino route operated by Ethiopian effective March 29. Ethiopian Airlines will also place its code on domestic Italian routes operated by Air One.

Ethiopian Airlines has reportedly sold its only B732 to Star Equatorial Airlines.

Ethiopian Cargo leases two B742Fs, to serve Hong Kong

Ethiopian Cargo has leased two B742Fs from Southern Air Inc on an wet lease basis. The first aircraft will join ET on November 17 on a 14-month lease, while the second one will arrive on December 31, on a 19-month lease. Both aircraft will ply the Addis Ababa-Brussels route.

The airline will also start weekly cargo service to Hong Kong effective January 4.

Ethiopian and Lufthansa in frequent flyer agreement

Effective October 28, members of Ethiopian Airlines’ ShebaMiles and Lufthansa’s Miles & More will be able to earn miles and redeem reward tickets on flights operated by the other airline.

Highlights of Ethiopian’s winter schedule

Here are the highlights of Ethiopian Airlines‘ upcoming winter schedules, which take effect at the end of October:
- Bangkok will be served 9x per week, continuing on to Hong Konk 3x per week and Guangzhou 6x per week
- Guangzhou will be served 6x per week via Bangkok, up from the current 4x per week
- Delhi will be served 5x per week, up from the current 4x per week
- Beijing will be served 5x per week via Delhi, up from the current 4x per week
- Juba will be served 3x per week, up from the current 2x per week
- Cairo will be served 4x per week via Khartoum, down from the current 5x per week (night flights eliminated, one daytime flight added)
- Khartoum will be served 7x per week (4 daytime, 3 night time)
- Dubai will be served 13x per week, down from the current 2x daily (no daytime flight on Saturday)
- Jeddah will be served 4x per week, up from the current 3x per week
- Bahrain/Abu Dhabi will be served 3x per week, down from the current 4x per week
- Lagos will be served 10x per week, down from the current 11x per week (reduction in one weekly night time flight)
- Accra will be served 7x per week, down from the current 8x per week (reduction in one weekly night time flight)
- Abidjan will be served 6x per week, with three daytime and three night time flights (the night time flight is a continuation of the Addis-Lagos-Accra service)
- Luanda will be served 4x per week, up from the current 3x per week
- Bamako will be served nonstop, with continuing service to Dakar
- Washington DC will be served 5x per week, down from the current 6x per week (no flights on Mondays and Wednesdays)

Ethiopian leases another B752

Ethiopian Airlines has leased and taken delivery of a B752 from GECAS. The aircraft, which is on a 6-year dry lease, last served with Harmony Airways and seats 16 in Business, 159 in Economy.

Ethiopian to drop Amsterdam, up Brussels

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian Airlines will drop Amsterdam, Netherlands in favour of increasing service to Brussels, Belgium from the current 3x per week to 6x per week effective the end of October. Half of the flights to BRU will be routed via Frankfurt, while the rest will go via Paris.

KLM will remain the only airline serving the Amsterdam - Addis Ababa route.

Ethiopian eyes new routes, hub

According to ATWOnline, Ethiopian Airlines has applied to serve Toronto, Canada from its hub in Addis Ababa, and “hopes to fly to New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare and Atlanta” in the United States. The airline’s CEO also states that the airline is considering the opening of new routes to India and China.

The airline also intends to set up a hub in Lome, Togo, with plans to provide services to five destinations.
