Ethiopian to add flights to Dar es Salaam

Ethiopian will add evening flights to Dar es Salaam beginning on October 26. The new flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays bringing the total frequency to 11x per week. The new flights will operate via Nairobi.

Ethiopian Airlines will begin new daily service to Mombasa, Kenya on October 25. Flights will be coupled with existing service to Kilimanjaro using B73W aircraft.

Ethiopian orders twelve A359s

Ethiopian Airlines placed an order with Airbus for twelve A359s. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2017.

Ethiopian orders five 772LRs

Ethiopian Airlines placed an order for five 772LRs from Boeing with delivery set to begin in October 2010.

Saudi Arabian and Ethiopian to expand code share

Saudi Arabian and Ethiopian Airlines will expand their code share agreement to include Ethiopian’s service to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The airlines already code share on flights between Addis and Jeddah.

Highlights of Ethiopian’s summer schedule

Highlights of Ethiopian’s upcoming summer schedule are as follows:
- Abuja, Nigeria will be served daily as of June, up from the current 3x per week service
- Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire service will increase to 8x per week, up from the current 3x per week
- Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso service will increase to 4x per week up from the current 3x per week
- Lagos, Nigeria frequency will increase to 11x per week, up from 10x per week (with the addition of a weekly night time flight)
- Ndjamena, Chad frequency will increase to 7x per week, up from 5x per week (split between day time and night time flights)
- Harare, Zimbabwe and Lubumbashi, DRC frequency will increase to 5x per week, up from four
- Frankfurt, Germany will get a fourth weekly flight, up from 3x per week (new flight via Rome, Italy)
- Stockholm, Sweden will get a fourth weekly flight, up from 3x per week (also via Rome)
- Bahrain and Kuwait will see daily service, up from the current 3x service on the Addis - Bahrain - Kuwait - Addis triangle route
- Dubai will see a reduction in frequency to 18x per week, down from the current thrice daily service
- Hong Kong will see a fourth weekly flight via Bangkok, bringing service to the latter to 10x per week (Ghangzhou will be served 6x per week via Bangkok)

Ethiopian to return to Riyadh

Ethiopian Airlines’ on again, off again service to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is now on again, with service scheduled to begin on June 2nd. Flights will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using 73Ws.

Ethiopian Airlines to serve Malabo

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian Airlines will begin new service between Addis Ababa and Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on June 2nd. Flights will operate 4x per week via Douala, Cameroon.

With this new service and the airline’s existing 4x service to Libreville, Gabon via Douala, Douala will see daily service from the airline’s hub.

Ethiopian reduces frequency to US, China

Ethiopian Airlines will reportedly reduce frequency to Washington DC to 4x per week while at the same time reducing service to China to 12x per week from fourteen. The airline cites lower passenger numbers recorded since November.

Ethiopian to lease two B738s

According to a report by Air Transport Intelligence, Ethiopian has signed an MoU with ALAFCO for the lease of two B738s which are set for delivery in March and June.

Furthermore, the airline’s year 2023 fleet vision comprises 23 Boeing 737-700 and -800s, 17 787-8s and 28 aircraft in the 300-plus seat range “as it studies new long-haul services to three points in Asia, one in Russia, two in Latin America and three in North America.” The airline is also looking at expanding to 22 new African destinations over the next 15 years.

Ethiopian receives first MD11F

Ethiopian received its first of two MD11 freighter aircraft from Boeing on Saturday. This example was purchased from the manufacturer, while the second aircraft, slated for delivery in August, will be leased.

Ethiopian and bmi to codeshare

Ethiopian Airlines and bmi will place each other’s code on services between Addis Ababa and London effective January 19. Ethiopian operates 6 flights per week, while bmi operates 5.

Ethiopian placing code on Lufthansa flights

Further to Lufthansa placing its code on Ethiopian flights, Ethiopian is placing its code on select Lufthansa services from Frankfurt to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Geneva and Stockholm.

Ethiopian orders eight Bombardier Q400s

Ethiopian Airlines has ordered eight Bombardier Q400s to renew its domestic fleet, with an option for another four.

Lufthansa placing code on Ethiopian’s african flights

While no formal announcements were made, Lufthansa is placing its code on select Ethiopian Airlines services to Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Kigali, and Entebbe.

Kuwait Airways to place code on Ethiopian’s flights

Kuwait Airways will place its code on Ethiopian’s 3x per week flights between Addis Ababa and Kuwait City as of th begining of November.

Ethiopian to code share with Saudi Arabian

According to posted schedules, Ethiopian will place its code (ET1500) on Saudi Arabian’s single weekly flight between Addis Ababa and Jeddah beginning January 4, increasing Ethiopian’s weekly service to five.

Ethiopian to serve Abuja

According to Xinhua, Ethiopian Airlines will begin 3x per week service to Abuja, Nigeria on November 15 following an accord signed on Sunday between Nigerian and Ethiopian officials. Flights will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ethiopian Airlines will return to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with 3x per week service beginning October 26. Flights will be operated Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ethiopian to place code on Lufthansa flights to the US

Lufthansa has applied and received permission from the US Department of Transportation for Ethiopian Airlines to place its code (to code share) on LH flights between Europe and the United States. The approval, which is initially based on service between Frankfurt and the cities of San Fransisco and Los Angeles per the application, allows for Ethiopian to place its code effective August 1.

Ethiopian leases two B752s

Ethiopian Airlines has leased and taken delivery of two B752s from Babcock & Brown on 5-year terms. Both aircraft were previously leased to now defunct ATA Airlines.

Ethiopian and Asky to form strategic partnership

Ethiopian Airlines and newly formed West African airline “Asky” have reportedly signed an MoU to form a strategic partnership which will see Asky operating out of a new hub in Lome, Togo. Ethiopian will hold a stake of up to 20% in the new airline which is expected to take flight before the end of 2008, operating up to 8 leased aircraft on local, regional and long haul routes.

Ethiopian Cargo to Liege

Ethiopian Cargo will reportedly move its freighter service from Brussels to Liège (also in Belgium) effective June 16.
